White's books were popular at a time when America was losing its vanishing wilderness. He was a keen observer of the beauties of nature and human nature, yet could render them in a plain-spoken style. Based on his own experience, whether writing camping journals or Westerns, he included pithy and fun details about cabin-building, canoeing, logging, gold-hunting, and guns and fishing and hunting. He also interviewed people who had been involved in the fur trade, the California gold rush and other pioneers which provided him with details that give his novels verisimilitude. He salted in humor and sympathy for colorful characters such as canny Indian guides and "greenhorn" campers who carried too much gear. White also illustrated some of his books with his own photographs, while some of his other books, were illustrated by artists, such as the American Western painter Fernand Lungren for "The Mountains" and "Camp and Trail". Theodore Roosevelt wrote that White was "the best man with both pistol and rifle who ever shot" at Roosevelt's rifle range at Sagamore Hill.

I found myself reading this tale of old San Francisco over the span of many months. I read it piecemeal, as short bits and stops, completely interrupted by an automobile wreck of some significance for my part; but I always found it awaiting my return when and where I could! The Gray Dawn barely disappointed, in fact it always kept my attention even when my eyelids grew heavy. I really mostly at bedtime and the book envisioned and inspired a few vivid dream escapes over the scope of many months. As I read The Gray Dawn, I found reason to study the history of San Francisco, where I found more reason to enjoy the book! The twist and turns of life and living in the bawdy and rollicking heart of San Francisco had the young town with divided factions at great odds for many of its establishment years, with the outcome always in the balance. The subsequent history of San Francisco and California would not have ever been as romantic without the strife and resistance to tyranny of good and brave men! No novel captures all of the significance of the happenings of reality, but The Gray Dawn did it's best to do so. The word pictures are painted quite well, just as the dog rolled to expose its underbelly in submission! I enjoyed my reading of The Gray Dawn!

Excellent historical novel about the early days of San Francisco.
good story
Too long and somewhat boring. Could have made a four hour book from this one
Mr White has written many good books. This was a good example of his talent. He always has a story that is interesting and informed on the time he is writing about.
Not as good as some of his other books.
Great REading
This book is really the tale of an event of significant interest in the early development of San Francisco, the rising of the vigilantes to quell the violence and corruption that had taken control of the city in the wake of the gold rush. The portrayal of the city is unique and unexpected. However, the plot is very slow and the characters pretty flat. Three stars is a generous rating.
